BABY GIRL

I was 14 years old when Aaliyah passed away. August 24, 2001 I was in San Francisco, CA battling at the annual DMC USA DJ Competition. Infamous from the Allies took 3rd place that evening. His routine that night was innovative and different. It comprised of "Try Again" and "We Need A Resolution". News of the tragedy was announced when I arrived back to my hotel.

Zebra Records at the time had been throwing monthly DJ competitions at their retail location on Haight Street. On the same exact day she passed they had a battle scheduled. Compose and Jami from my crew were competitors. Jami ended up placing 1st in the competition that day. His winning set included his classic take on "Try Again".

She was Hip-Hop/R&B's princess. The reasoning to the unfamiliar production from Timbaland. I remember the next morning taking a walk by myself down Union Square and began hearing her voice. Like the volume started to turn up. I looked up and saw it was coming from The Virgin Mega-Store. Inside, meloncholy was immanent.

7 years later, I still have an avid memory of the whole weekend. I have trouble remembering what I did last weekend.

I came across this at Borders last night.

Caps (of Caps & Jones) submitted this mix to The Fader commemorating the life and music of Aaliyah.
